Date : March 2017
Well as we slowly but surely come out of the depths of winter here is my review of the winter tennis season that is coming to a close.
Is this one of the most interesting seasons for the men’s teams?
The men’s E and F teams are promoted and on the same points! The F teaming winning the division because of their 5-3 victory against the E team on the 11th of March. “Don’t tell me you missed the action”! Well done to both Donald and Matt.
The D team after gaining promotion last winter found themselves in a very tough division. With every match being an FA cup final the D team stayed up with a few points in hand. Highlight of the season; last match v North Oxford D away. The D team needing a win, were 3-1 down at half time but came storming back to win 5-3 to secure their place next season. Fantastic result.
The C team led by their inspirational captain finished with a mammoth 47 points the highest C team in the leagues!
Congratulations to the B team who have won division 1 title and are now heading back into the premier league. A canny bit of player juggling and swapping over the winter months and a lot of positive team talk has worked well. Well done Jamie.
My goodness what can you say about the men’s A team? Sunday 19th March was like the good old days watching the tele printer on TV waiting for the scores to come in! The A’s finished their season a couple of weekends ago and have been ‘hanging about’ for the last match of the season to decide the premier division title. Abingdon A needed to beat Portcullis (who were already relegated) 8-0 to snatch glory from Oxford Sports. Abingdon won 7-1 which was not enough to deny Oxford Sports men’s A victory. I think this is the 3rd premiership title for the men’s A in a row. Well done Dave.
It must also be mentioned what an important role our juniors have made this season. By my calculations, I think there have been 10 juniors who have experienced league tennis, with many of them now regulars in the various teams. Without them we would have all found it a much tougher winter.
Well before I go just a couple of things to think about before a report back in the summer.
1) In professional tennis, when are new tennis balls never used (yes you all should know that)?
And another thing to think about:
2) When in a match should you use a bit of TLC? You know when things are not going well, your partner is double faulting and you’re not playing very well. When is the right time for a bit of TLC? Have a think and let me know. (I have my own views on this topic).
Oooo and one last thing, I will be doing a “Player Profile” next time, so I will be interviewing one of you about your playing career, what you like / dislike about tennis, and other things we never knew about you. Watch this space.
All this to look forward to and more.
Enjoy the beautiful game.
PS Steve is looking for someone to take over the D team. If anyone is interested please give Steve or me a call.
